As schools move
technology from a high school subject to a core K-12 subject, many
schools will start with a once or twice per week technology class
structure.
Reasons for only
once or twice per week technology classes:
Might need more than one lab; might need more than one instructor;
younger grades don't need multiple weekly classes yet; your
curriculum may strand technology in other subjects; achievement in
other subjects may suffer if class time is robbed from them; you may
be using your publisher's Microsoft Office training curriculum also.
Main
Considerations: Lab
size and school size may determine the answer for you. Your
budget of a part-time versus full-time instructor may also guide
you. Your teachers may only want to give up one class period
so they don't lose class time in other subjects. Generally a lab of
approximately 25 computers can handle 400-500 students per week with
once per week classes. Therefore, this size of lab will
handle 200-250 students with twice per week classes. It is
highly recommended to have a lab size that handles your largest
classroom of students for the easiest scheduling. If you only
have once per week classes, you should try to block all the classes
so your instructor does not have to be there everyday AND to
structure it so you have the option of twice per week later. Schools
that are implementing our program will find older students
functioning at grade level much sooner by having twice per week
classes. If you are considering a once per week class
structure, it is highly recommended that 3rd and 4th grade are
scheduled extra time the first year to complete remedial work AND
advance in keyboarding (possibly a second class per week).
Recommended
options with best at top:
- Once per week for K-2nd, twice per
week for 3rd and up.
- Once per week for K-2nd, twice per
week for 3rd-4th (3rd and 4th keyboarding benefit), once per
week for 5th and up.
- Once per week for K up
- Once per week for 1st up (no K)
- Schools smaller than 150 students
or two labs or large lab: Once per week for K-2nd, twice per
week for 3rd-5th, three times or more per week for 6th and up.
You
will be able to quickly analyze your options with our Starter Guide
(on the Sample Lesson page). Some teachers may want to take
the class with their students to be of greater benefit to your
school with their improved skills. Note: Having multiple
technology instructors will multiply computer breakdowns by over
four times. top |
