1.
Starting the Program:
Students open the
program from an icon on the Desktop or open a browser and go to
www.labacademy.com. OCL will work with Windows 98 and newer
operating systems.

2.
Login:
Students
are issued their username and password at the beginning of the
year. Students can change their password to something that is easy
to remember. Their instructor can tell them the password if they forget
it.
3.
Student Screen:
Screenshot of main
student window. Students select the course they are currently
working on from the My
Courses box. The lesson that is currently being
worked on is selected. They complete the 5 steps of a lesson
by clicking on each step at the bottom-center
of their screen. Scores are automatically
entered in the Grades section of the
Administration box which can be seen from home or
school.
4.
Start or
Resume Lesson: Students can quickly
access the current course from the left side of the
student screen after they have logged in. Once they open the course,
students use a lesson menu to resume work. Note: students
use a Student Record Card (SRC) to have a hard copy of progress
next to the computer which is helpful for the teacher or parent to
quickly see progress without disrupting the student. New
courses can be easily added by clicking "All Courses".
5.
Grades:
Students can also access their quiz and test
grades from the Administration box on the left
side of the student screen. Each student can
only see his/her grades. This can also be used to
remind the student which lesson is next.
6.
Lesson Menu:
After watching the video, students can access the
remaining components of the lesson from the lower
part of the student screen.

Information
about individual items on the Lesson menu:
7.
Video and Mastery Drills:
Both the Video Drill and Mastery Drill help the
student review and memorize important
information. Drills
instantly notify the student if the answer is
incorrect so students do not leave "wrong
information" in their memory.
Schools can rely on OCL to keep the use of
questionable examples and wording out of our
curriculum.

8.
Enhancement Assignments:
Enhancement
Assignments require the completion of an external
task (outside of the Lab Academy system).
Once the objective is reached, the student needs
to have the instructor or parent look at the
screen to verify it is completed. Students are
taught multi-tasking in lower lessons so they
learn how to keep their instructions open and
available while working in other programs. Instructors
can quickly lookup the lesson number in their Instructor
Guide to see a screen shot or description of what
the student should have accomplished.
Enhancement Assignments cover a wide range of
tasks. Many of the lower levels' assignments
require the student to use programs like the
Spanish program and a keyboarding program.
A majority of the assignments require the student
to complete a task in another program such as a
word processing, spread sheet, presentation,
graphics, database, or other tool. Here is a
shorter assignment designed for 5th graders.

Enhancement Assignment: Fix
the Printing of Web Pages
Overview: Most people do not
know why web pages do not print very well. Text or pictures are sometimes
cutoff when printing. Often pictures end up on different sheets than the
author intended. This is due to the browser (web program) not having the
margins set right. Many browsers come with settings that are not optimal
for printing. This assignment will have you fix this problem and also
remove the printing of page numbers and the web address on the printed
sheets.
Program Needed: You
will be able to do this assignment right from this screen!
Instructions:
1. Click File, then
click Page Setup in this browser window. Another student may have
already changed these settings on your computer. Make sure step 2 was done
and change the numbers in step 3 anyway.
2. Once the Page Setup
window opens, you will make it so the web address and page number do not
print. This is accomplished by removing all the characters in the two
white boxes underneath Header and Footer. Click in each box
and delete the &b&u&d or whatever is in them. Look at the
picture below. (You learn about the "&" options in headers and
footers in our word processing training.)
3. Now we are going to fix
the margins. You will notice the Left, Right, Top, and Bottom margin boxes
have numbers next to them. We are going to change the Left and Right to
.25 and the Top and Bottom to .5, then click OK. We just
click in the box and delete the old number, then type the new number on all four
boxes.
Tips: Make sure to use the
period before the numbers! You do not need to type the " symbol
after the numbers. Make sure you do not change anything else on the
page. If you receive a message that says "out
of printer range, do you want to fix?", click Ok or Yes. Some
printers require a slightly different setting than what we are using. Your
browser will remember these settings until you change them.

4.
Click File, Page Setup to reopen the Page Setup window to show
your instructor for your Enhancement Assignment initial. Once
you have the initial, close this window and proceed back to Lab Academy to
complete the Mastery Drill.

9.
Quizzes, and Tests:
The quizzes and recap tests are
automatically scored and recorded in the
student's account. Although we
use several quiz structure methods, this matching structure is one of
the most common. Students can retake quizzes, and the grades are
averaged together. Quizzes and tests are not allowed to be
done at home (unless homeschooling) and require an instructor
password. The video lesson, video
drill, enhancement assignment, and mastery
drill can be done at home.
